Not your typical SAT prep book. I like this dictionary. Some of the sentences are actually funny and reading about the freaks at Anytown makes studying for the SAT almost bearable. Much better than boring flash cards.

Kaplan SAT Score-Raising Dictionary. The best way to learn vocabulary is through reading. There comes a point
in studying for the SAT wherein, a volume like this one would be helpful.
This text has typical words and their usage set forth in an easy-to-read
format. It#039s important to have comprehensive definitions and sentences
because memorizing vocabulary for the SAT exam would be pointless.
Sample words are:
o abrasive
o accentuate
o alacrity
o ascetic
o benign
o cacophony
o cadence etc.

This dictionary would be invaluable in order to assist in mastering
the diction requisite for success on this exam.

It#039s OK. The book contains a large volume of words however, I do not have information on the applicability of these words to the SAT. The format is acceptable, but not effective enough to enable digestion or ownership of the new words, nor interesting enough to generate enthusiasm to learn more words. The user must rely on his/her own initiative or persistence to peruse the book.

Interesting and instructional at the same time. Probably the primary reason that something is easy to learn is because it#039s interesting. Spelling and vocabulary building are usually not among those that arouse interest however, this book makes these topics interesting for the student by creating amusing word-use sentences that involve teen-think. My daughter really likes using it for her weekly (homeschooled) vocabulary lessons.

Funny. some characters ar e weird but I liked reading about them. read the whole book. now i#039m going back to learn the SAT words.

Helpful and Informative. My twins will be taking the SAT next year and I found this book very insightful, with ideas that I am starting to utilize with my children. This has helped me understand how to help my children perform better on the SAT. A lot of books conatin tests and questions, but this book has given me a different perspective.

Well worth the investment.

A Refreshing Gift. A refreshing approach to what is often a dry subject. This is so much more than a test preparation book, this is a book about life and creativity and values and how important those things are in becoming a happy, fulfilled person. Every parent should read this book - and every student as well. It#039s about balance and focus and big picture goals. As it happens, practicing the seven simple principals will likely bring you close or closer to a perfect score. The beauty is that the score is not an end in itself, but a means to more opportunities for a rich and satisfying life.

The author stresses that self-motivation, creativity and curiosity are critical - all things that can and should be encouraged from very early ages. This far-reaching study truly confirms what many of us would like to think. Using the characteristics of the perfect score students, Fischgrund illustrates that success is not driven by money or privilege but by developing passions and focusing on the big picture. This is a book I will recommend to all. What a gift.

It all starts with Statistics.... Statistics will show us correlation, but causation can be a difficult thing to tease out from the data. From the get go I had a hard time getting very far into this book after reading the description of the author#039s data gathering regarding the perfect score students and the control group. It was IMHO not rigorous enough to lead to statements such as "myth shattering" and "results [...] turn the idea of SAT preparation on its head" (granted, SAT preparation is yet another story, but I digress).

The author also goes on to imply/state how much influence parents have on the ultimate success of their child. Yes, parents do have an impact on their children, but when it comes to the drive to succeed, a parent#039s impact may not be as great as we like to think. I highly suggest anyone reading this check out Levitt#039s "Freakonomics". While the whole book is not devoted to the subject of parents#039 impact on their children, there is some insightful information regarding children and their success in school/life in chapters 5 and 6 (the "Perfect Parent").

Now as far as the "secrets" go well they are good general pursuits that everyone would benefit from. To treat them as "secrets" that will help one ace the SAT is dubious.

While interesting, this book thinks the SAT is everything. This book sheds light on some of our brightest students, illustrating that even students with 1600s are not nerds who lock themselves studying in their own cloisters all day long.

However, this book is too praising of the SAT and is not representative of our nation#039s top students. It assumes that the best students are the ones who receive 1600: those with 1590s are automatically discredited from participating in this book#039s study, even if 1590s are just as intellectually capabkle as 1600s, probably only slightly more likely to make minor mistakes.

Drawing on the first study of 1600 scorers conducted with the full cooperation of the College Board, here are the 7 secrets to success on the SAT - and in life.

PSAT Material helpful. The study material is organized to aid - and not overwhelm - the student. A good study source.

Pretty good. This is a pretty good review. I wished they had more tests though, two is not quite enough for preparation. I liked the first part of the book where it talks about the qualifications for the tests and the national merit scholarship, however, it should be more detailed. The techniques are useful. I think the problems may be a little on the easier side.

My friend just buy this product McGraw-Hill#039s PSAT/NMSQT (by McGraw-Hill) :

Hoping to score a 230 above. This book is decent math-wise and writing skills-wise. The math is more difficult than that of the actual PSAT. Unfortunately, the reading section in this book is too easy and poorly written. It doesn#039t push you to think and utilize your "SAT, college-level" skills by process of elimination, logic, reasoning, etc... I scored an 80 on the reading, even though last year during 10th grade I only got a 63. This obviously is absurd, though if it were real, it#039d be nice. I also scorn the patent political favoritism of the author. He consistently mocks Democrats in the 2000 election while showing optimism and like for Bush and the Republicans, defending the latter#039s policies. I realized this a few practice tests in the writing sections, but what really blew the whistle was a specific article on global warming included in the reading, I believe. I am Democrat, so I found this offending. I think the author ought to have focused on the tests themselves instead of conveying a flagrant political message. He/she needs to beware of this, as such a message alienates potential buyers/readers.

Not "like new" as advertized.. the book is not "like new" as advertized. there were lots of highlighting, writing, etc. in the diagnostic test. the rest of the book was in good condition

A revolutionary book for the PSAT !. First of all, this is a truly amazing book. It changes the way many people views the PSAT. Debunking the myth that PSAT/SAT is designed by ETS merely to test your "test-taking skill"(which is suggested by many mercenary test prep companies/books), the book announces that SAT does another great thing: IT MEASURES YOUR ABILITY TO THINK CRITICALLY! Especially for those who want to excell at college, critical thinking skill is crucial.
Over all, three sections of the book are just perfect! Certainly, they all strongly emphasize the importance of your "thinking" ability.
I cannot recommend it enough. So check it out by yourself!

Too Many Errors. I like the organization. The mathematics section was nicely done, giving a well organized overview of PSAT math however, I must ding the book because we found 5 errors in the answer sections for two math worksheets. Sloppy, sloppy.

An exercise in frustration. Although this edition (copyright 2006) of the book has some useful reasoning skills, it is full of errors and typos in the math section. The errors are so abundant that I found many parts of the book useless and frustrating. I used this book as well other SAT and PSAT books (Gruber, Barron, Kaplan, King, College board) and while all the other books have some typos, this one by far has the most and the College Board book has the least. My favorite book is the one by Elizabeth King called Outsmarting the SAT. She actually takes the SAT test every year and her examples are indeed very close to the actual tests from the college board book.
The English section in this PSAT book is too easy and not representative of the actual tests. Test scores from practice exams in this book can be misleading. Overall, if this book had fixed its many typos and made the English practice portion more representative, it would have gotten a better rating.
If you plan to buy this book, wait for a newer edition. Be aware however that as of August 2009, there is no new edition yet.

It Got Me a High Score!. I took the PSAT in October, 2009. I used this PSAT guide over the summer, and it gave me pretty good scores. I got a 50 in critical reading (75 percentile), 75 in mathematics (99 percentile), and 70 in writing (99 percentile). My overall percentile was 95. That reading score is obvious low, but that is because I spent the least time in that section. I just did not put in the time to learn all the vocabulary and my vocabulary is already limited so that is why that score is so much smaller. These scores are also pretty indicative of how I do in my school classes. I am great at math problems and writing essays, but suck at reading comprehension. When I got my PSAT answer sheet and booklet back, I realized that the only reason I did not get 2 perfect scores was because of some stupid mistakes. Since I was only a sophomore when I took it, I plan to take it again my junior year in hope that I can qualify for a National Merit Scholarship. If I work on that reading, I am sure that I can get a perfect or near perfect score. I will definitely be reviewing this guide this summer.

This book helped me a great deal in the SAT math section.. When I was taking the SAT in 9th grade I didn#039t think I was going to do that well but when I got the 100 SAT math tips and 500 SAT words and how to remeber them forever prep books they both contributed to my 1300!

Great,But.... I love this book its great if you can sit and read, without being bored out of your mind.
This book tries to teach you these words through many mnemonic devices that i think are awesome, if thats how you learn. For instance aloof, "think of a person on a roof, separated and detached" than their might be a picture to further help you remember.
Personally I made flash cards with all of these words. That was a tedious job,
so i ended up buying a set of flash cards instead.

What#039s Good For The Teenager Is Also Good For The Parent. My teenage son shared with me that this book was going to be a great study guide in preparation for the SAT. I was intrigued by his comments so I decided to review the book. Where was this book when I took the SAT in bell bottoms and a T-shirt with the peace sign on it Thanks Charles ... a book with a "common sense" approach. A must buy for the serious SAT test taker!

Great for homeschoolers. When my daughter was in the 10th. grade, she was homeschooled.
We purchased a set of curriculum, which of course, included
English. I wasn#039t satisfied with the vocabulary portion of it,
so I used this book. I gave her 10 new words each week and we
both had so much fun learning them! The illustrations are great
and they really do help you to remember them. Every week when
tested, my daughter always got 100% correct. A few years later,
my son was homeschooled for the 7th. grade. Out came the book
again! I also use it to look up words, before reaching for a
dictionary. Having a good vocabulary (and using the words you
know correctly) is very important and I would recommend this
book for everyone.

Very useful, only a one small issue.... These cards are an easy way to boost your SAT-specific vocabulary. The flashcard format allows for quick repetition, more than with books in my opinion. I only wish they had pronunciation keys next to the definitions. I recommend these cards along with "Verbal Advantage" and a pocket dictionary for a lasting vocabulary increase. Daily reading, however, is still your best bet for a lifelong and effective vocabulary. These cards are just tools to speed up the process.

Not bad. There are quite a few errors, but it is still very helpful. It#039s better to use this book than not use any.

Barron#039s How to prepare for the PSAT/ NMSQT mistakes. My aim was to buy a PSAT prep book that would prepare for the test. I, knowing very little about the reputations of various SAT prep companies, ended up purchasing this book because it was the cheapest on the rack at Borders. I was, however, immensely disappointed on the quality of instruction it offered. The first sample test was utterly glutted with errors and mistakes. I also heard later that the questions weren#039t even real PSAT questions. Personally, I plan on contacting Barron#039s so I can receive a full refund.

Pitiful. This is the worst book you could possibly purchase to prepare for the PSAT. The format of its questions are irregular and foreign to that of the real PSAT. If you plan on preparing for National Merit, you should go with a Princeton Review book. Surprisingly, Barron#039s SAT prep book isn#039t that bad.

This is jsut as good as their SAT book!. I used Barron#039s SAT review book this spring and did fantastically on the May exam. My younger brother is taking the PSAT in October so he got this book to get ready. I looked it over and realized that all the good strategies from the SAT book are here. And it has all the stuff from the PSAT as well. When I studied for the PSAT this book wasn#039t out yet. How lucky is he. It is the only book that I have seen that has more than 10 practice PSAT#039s-including the writing skills part.If you are in 10th grade and are taking the PSAT next year, you should get this book!

It helped me-now it#039s helping my sister. In my sophomore year I took the PSAT and got 1140. Last year I used this book to prepare for the PSAT-I got 1330 (a 190 point increase!) and received a National Merit Letter of Commendation. I went through the whole book and found about 6 or 7 typos and 2 actual errors-out of thousands of questions. no big deal. but my sister just got a copy (mine was all marked up, so she got her own) and in her later printing, the typos were gone! She really likes the different tactics for the math and even though I am a slightly better student than she is, she may get an even higher score than I did.

Uneffective. Real SAT questions are not like the ones in this book. The review strategies are at times silly, especially since they are not applied to actual SAT questions and material. Stick to what College Board releases.

No change in the score. I bought this for my daughter after she received identical scores on two SAT tests. She read this book, did the exercises and guess what Her third SAT still had the same identical score. She quit SAT#039s after that.

A lot of easy problems, not enough hard ones. How does one get a 2400 if they practice many easy problems as opposed to difficult ones. There are too many easy problems in this book, which is a waste of time for high acheiving math students.

Very good book. The book was great in providing all the guidelines, examples, samples and tricks. I also enrolled my kids in a semi-private class. Together, the book and class helped raise their scores in ACT by at least 2 points.

FAKE QUESTIONS. The practice tests in this book are NOT REAL. They are simulated. So who cares Because the official SAT questions are DIFFERENT. This is like practicing mountain biking when you are going to go road biking.

Buy the Official SAT Study Guide, then go buy the Official SAT Study Guide Solutions Manual.

Only 1 psat exam. Why even include the PSAT in this book if there is only one exam,
Some people really don#039t take the national merit qualifying exam seriously geez.
the other tests are pretty comprehensive for SAT, but they tricked us
into buying this because I thought there would be more tests for the PSAT.

If you are studying for PSAT, national merit, perhaps you should just stick with the PSAT prep book and find more practice tests elsewhere, this book is more for SAT.

Excellent Study Guide. I took the SAT back in fall and came back with the egregious score of 1800, so I began studying. I weighed my options and picked this book. The reasons were: the explanations after every section more than suffice to understand why I missed the question the math section is very comparable to the actual exam, using the same tricky wording and problems also the reading selections I found quite interesting and also pretty challenging. Well in all, I came out with a 2250 on the May examination. Keep in mind, it really is just practice, I really enjoyed this book, but almost any book out there can produce the same result.

Good SAT prep textbook. The practice exercises in this book cover a wide range of contents that are found in real SAT test. However, it does repeat many contents found in previous editions. The PSAT section doesn#039t seem to be necessary to be included in this book.

My friend just having this Kaplan SAT PSAT 2003 with CD-ROM, Spring Edition (by Kaplan Publishing) :

Big Surprise. I used Kaplan#039s book religiously to study for the SAT and I ended up getting an "F". I would NOT recommend this test guide. The book mostly consisted of information about, and pictures of, former New York Mets first baseman Keith Hernandez. But come test time, only a few questions on the exam pertained to him. I ended up getting an "F".

KAPLAN TESTS WERE EASIER THAN THE ACTUAL SAT :(. I studied off of the Kaplan SAT PSAT 2002 with CD-ROM.. and i juss recently took the June 7, 2003 SAT I test. The tests in the Kaplan book were much easier than the actual test... therefore, i came out of the actual June 7 test feeling like i bombed it. The Kaplan tests indicated I got about 1240... but I doubt I got anything near that on the june 7 test. i feel like i will get about 1150... but who knows. well i was really somewhat disappointed with this book. i will write a new review on this book after my actual test score comes out... but until then, i personally didn#039t like this book.

Great SAT prep book!. All of the strategies taught in this book helped me immensely with the SAT. I took the PSAT last year and even though I got an SAT equivalent of a 1390 on the test I still wanted to improve so I brought this book. I read through the whole book carefully and studied the list of vocabulary words in the back of this book since English is not my first language (I#039m Chinese) and my weakness is in the verbal part. Then I took all the practice tests in the book and on the CD and my score was consistently above 1500. When I took the SAT for the first time, my score was a 1550! This book will really improve your score if you spend time actually going through the whole book.

Excellent prep. I had been visiting colleges a few weeks before I was to take the SAT and an admissions counselor recommended this book to me. Even though I only had a couple weeks, I went through this book and found it very useful. It gives you a familiarity with the test that is very important to have. It is excellent book, especially if you do not have much time. If you do have more time, I would recommend using this along with Kaplan#039s SAT 1600.

Everyone is told to buy the big blue book from the company that administers the SAT. I did this, however despite being great for having old tests to practice with there were not any other resources. I was in Barnes and Noble looking for test prep books because I was always anti-tutoring I felt that it never really went any where you need to know how to take the test, plan your time, and know what to expect. I had never heard of the Rocket Review prior to this time, however I did approach one of the sales reps who claimed that she did know a thing or two about SAT test prep books. She had nothing bad to say about this book, she said that she recommends buying the blue books as did everyone else, but she also said that Robinson was the man who perfected the Joe Blogs tool. I shook my head as if I knew what that meant, and then she showed it to me in the Princeton Review prep book.

I am not here to knock any authors or books, but looking through the Princeton Review guide I did not see much help. I decided to take this book on, as my main source of preparation. The best part about this book, was reading the comments, and the way the book went around choosing a correct answer, and planning my time. I will not say that I would read this book for fun, however as a guide for the SAT, it is the best tool I could have found, and I have recommended this book to everyone I know.

It is hands down, the reason why I was so succesful with the best, it does not claim to give you 300 points for reading the book, and its not a heavy read at all. But using this guide as a resource can only help, and it helps a lot.

So if you are a parent, or a student. Great book, I have nothing but good things to say.

Great Book!. I too experienced a problem not having the answers, until I came across the Teacher#039s Edition. It had all of the practice information in the Student Edition, accompanied with answers. It also has the added bonus of effective strategies and helpful hints. Contains such great things as "Guided Practice," "Independent Practice," and sections entitled "Putting It All Together-" helpful for a cumulative review of a chapter. If the SATs are anytime soon, I#039d advise those taking it to get this book and prepare...it is the best out there!

Excellent and useful. The one I own is the teacher#039s edition, which contains all the answers. Has excellent vocabulary cards, and th aSAT is mostly vocab.

Answers to sample testquizzes are not provided in book.. I bought this book for my daughter, who is in the 10th grade, to help her prepare for taking teh PSATs. It has many good sample tests and quizes to simulate the type of questions on the PSAT. However, answers are not provided in the book to check your own answers. How are you supposed to learn whats right wrong without knowing the correct answers.

If the author gets this mesage, please email me (sercolano@home.com) a response. Is there another book that has the answers Without the answers the bok is worthless.

I was very pleased with my students#039 responsiveness to Philip Geer#039s book Simon#039s Saga, and with its effectiveness as a tool for learning and recalling the meanings of advanced words.

Recently I#039ve been trying out Picture These SAT Words! and its flashcards with my classes. The pictures and accompanying puns that integrate the sound links for word recall are very creative and funny. My students really like the zany ideas behind them, and also appreciate the rhythm and rhyme of the puns. Another excellent thing about this method is that the sound link itself comes as close as it possibly can to the actual sound of the word.

One favorite is the difficult word "iconoclastic." The sound link is Ike Kono#039s class.The picture shows a teacher, Mr. Ike Kono, writing on a blackboard. His students are seen being "iconoclastic" (attacking cherished traditions). One student is sticking pins into a small Santa Claus doll. Others are raising their hands to suggest the abolishment of schools, tests, and Thanksgiving. The pun below the picture reads: Iconoclastic students in Ike Kono#039s class.

Another example that really amuses my students is "soporific," another difficult word which means "marked by sleepiness." The sound link given is soap horrific. The picture shows an alert old man sitting in a bathtub scrubbing himself, surrounded by little devils and snakes rising up out of the water. On the floor in front of the tub is a discarded soap wrapper upon which is written "soap horrific." From the bathroom door two old ladies look in on this scene. One says "He used to fall asleep in the bath until he tried Soap Horrific." The pun below the picture reads: He isn#039t soporific when he uses Soap Horrific.

As with Simon#039s Saga, I would rate Picture These SAT Words! and Picture These SAT Words in a Flash very highly as advanced vocabulary building tools. Could be much better. The mneumonic and picture don#039t really tie well to the words definitions. There are much better study helps than this

It makes the work easier. The pictures really helps, esp. if the person is young, I guess. Our daughter started "big" words very early - she is nine. She loves these cards and remembers the vocabularies very well with their help.

Get serious!. I would recommend this to children in elementary school. Pictorial definitions are fine for this age, however older students should have surpassed the dumbed down comic book approach. The pictorial representations fail to take into account the shades of meanings of words. The definitions offered will not stand up in most situations because of this narrow view of a word definition. This is where the product fails to deliver. Again, if you want to enhance your vocabulary, use a text based definition that takes into account the nuances of word meanings otherwise you are simply taking your chances with a quick cram job that is too surfacy. You will fail miserably when given a word on a standarized test in a context driven situation due to the narrowly focused definitions.

This set of vocabulary-building flash cards present cartoon illustrations showing visual puns with sample sentences and verbal mnemonics with definitions given on the reverse side of each card. Words and definitions are those that have appeared most frequently on recent SAT college entrance exams. USE WHATEVER HELPS. Its good to walk into a test with some idea of how to answer questions. It takes away a little nerviousness.

How to Up Your ACT Scores. Fast shipping!!!! Haven#039t read it yet, as it#039s for my sophomore daughter. But any prep for this CHALLENGING test is worth reading. I administer this test orally to academically challenged students, and perusing through the book, I#039m impressed with the tips it gives to be successful.

Great little book. This is an easy little book to use. Great as a daily tool. Son took test now my daughter is using the book to prepare.

Written by kids - and it shows.. I#039ve been teaching the SAT for one of the major international companies for 6 years, and also have my private tutoring business. I already had quite a lot of SAT books of various quality and decided to try this one.

Sadly I discovered it to be pretty much a waste of money. The advice given is often silly obvious tips written in a supposedly humorous style that became very wearing after the first few pages. The sample questions provided are of the too-simple #039not likely to see this in the real SAT#039 type or not representative.

There are a lot better books than this one out there. Start with the official guide and use it for all practice questions. If you need more tuition then try Kaplan for a general course or for math, I like the McGraw-Hill textbook.

A great book to help prepare you for the SAT. I remember reading an older version of this book a few years ago in preparation for the SAT, and it helped a lot. The book was written in a way that eases your fears and gives you lots of helpful tips/tricks to use on the test - without boring you to death. Bottom line, I was able to go into my test confidently and with ease after reading the book. I scored a 2000 by primarily using this book. While I would recommend this book, I would also suggest buying a book of practice questions so you can put the strategies in "Up Your Score" to good use. So I think you can spend less than $50 for two books and still do really well on the SAT - you don#039t need to spend a ton on prep courses if you put what#039s in this book to good use.

Why choose another, choose this McGraw Hill#039s SAT I (Book w/CD-ROM) (by McGraw-Hill) :

Sort of, but no.. Let me give you a run down of what is wrong about the high school teachers review, in order of how she wrote it. She says that other books only offer gimmicks, well, so does this book. She says that this book has alot of practice and good explinations to help tackle problem areas, NOT! While there is alot of practice, what good is practice unlike the real thing The answer explinations might as well not be there, because they are so short and unhelpful. Kaplan#039s explinations for the average critical reading section go on for about 5 pages. This book, about 1.5 (not front and back)! The flash cards are good, I agree but there are not enough of them. Her main argument, that this book teaches you reasoning skills, is pure craziness. The truth is, and I am being fair and honest, THE BOOK NEVER REALLY TEACHES YOU THESE SKILLS, IT JUST TELLS YOU HOW TO USE THEM! THE COLLEGE HILL METHOD WILL WORK AND IS A GOOD IDEA, BUT IT HAS MANY LIMITATIONS. IT DID NOT MEET MY EXPECTATIONS. No where in this book does it teach you reasoning skills other than telling you a method which only works on specific math problems. This book never gives any examples of this method either. The vocab is great, but there is little too much. This next part is insane. The practice tests in no way feel like the real thing!!! AAHHHHHHH!!!!!!! This book has too many limitations to be really usefull.

I am amazed.. How can people like this book. [...] Anyway, the lessons in this book make me sick. They make me feel like I am doing school work and don#039t tell you how this type of question will appear on the sat. The practice is the worst I have ever seen. I am not exagerating, I mean it!!! The math is interestingly hard, not because is tests the hard type of questions, but because it test questions that don#039t appear on the real test. Their math sections also have 20 grid-ins. The critical reading is just plain wierd and the writing is way to easy and contains to little questions. Ugh!!! The college hill method is supposed to get you the right answer. However, one of the steps is to think logically or, rephrasing it, use your reasoning skills. Great. They don#039t teach you how to develope those skills and have no examples using this method. The practice is a waste of time and some of the lessons did more harm than good. I get stressed out every time I think of this book. I TRUELY hate this book!

Great book, but consider getting College Board Study Guide to go along. The vocabulary sections of this book are VERY good, along with the reading section and writing section. However, I do NOT recommend the Math Section! The questions in the math section are MUCH harder than they actually are on the SAT (I#039ve taken it twice, and used this guide before, I prefer the College Board Study Guide for math). The vocabulary is 500 words and includes a comprehensive list for words on SAT, many of them did actually appear in the SAT That I took. The "Smart Cards" included are very useful, you can take them anywhere with you to study. If you plan on reading the entire book and understanding everything, be sure you have AT LEAST 2 months, because each lesson in this book may take up to 30 minutes or more up to an hour if you want to understand it fully.

Mcgraw hill plus college board=top score.. Don#039t be fooled by the bad reviews. I#039m sure that they never really used this book and "they" are most likely the same person writing reviews as different people. They are all writin in pretty much the same style (I REALLY doubt that the person actually took the march sat, he was probobly on college confidential and found out what the essay was, which would make sense because another person says he did the same thing!) Anyway, I found that working with this book, if you really work hard and go through everything in it, you will get an 800 in math and writing and a 700+ in critical reading. Both the math and writing are excellent. REALLY. I am now finding gramatical errors everywhere I go, and the sat grammar is a snap. After reviewing ONLY 4 lessons in this book (grammar) I took a test in the offical guide and scored a 750! A math of 800 and a critical reading of 710. The critical reading cannot gaurintee you an 800 (no book can, critical reading is not really teachable). But if you follow the methods and practice, you will eventually get there (the vocab and lessons are enough to ensure 0 sentence completions missed). The college hill method can be used on questions other than math and it gives you a rundown (30 pages) of it at the begining, where it teaches you the skills. Also, and entire math chapter is about it teaching you how to break apart and solve ALL math problems (VERY helpful). The practice is not realistic but there is alot of it. A very helpful book, thank you!

Wow wierd.. Wow this is weird, either you hate this book or you love it (yes there are only 5 practice tests). One thing, Jumpster said that all of the words on the march 12 sat were in the book. While on the college confidential website looking at the new sat thread, I found out that the two hard words were chicanery and potentate. While looking through the vocab, potentate is not mentioned and chicanery is only mentioned as a synonym to a certain words, which most people don#039t study. Also, for the 2 really hard math problems, chances are that he had a hard time with the last grid-in. After reviewing the question, I found it to have College Hill method writtin all over it. I don#039t think ets can write a question that uses the college hill method more than that one (also, this question was the same as the last grid-in from december 2002 weird). It makes me wonder why he had trouble with it... (this was a euphanism for saying that the college hill method sucks). Anyway, I think this book is great, but has setbacks. It teaches you material over all quite nicely, but some techniques they use might hurt you on the real test. For example, they have a method for questions like, what was the authors tone in the first paragraph, that says something like "because this is this, this is not possible, so this is right". However, in their example, I found that it is possible for the choice they "refuted" to be correct, based on the degree of intensity the author portrays. The practice tests are weird and the explianations unsatisfactory, but it teaches you the materail quite well. I also found that the college hill method could only be used on some types of questions and this book never "really" teaches you reasoning skills. I can see where the bad reviews are coming from, and if you don#039t yield to the fact that there is some faults in this book, then you are a complete chauvinist.

You can also buy this book with the College Board#039s book if you are just looking for answers and explanations to the tests, but I#039d recommend getting the tutorial as well, as this book references the strategies taught in the tutorial.

As I mentioned in my other review, I am an SAT tutor with years of experience consistently raising students#039 scores on the SAT. This book provides the clearest, most useful answers and explanations to the College Board#039s book of tests that I have ever seen. If there is ever a problem that I can#039t remember how to do (yes, it does happen every once in awhile, even when you do this for a living!), I just flip open the Ultimate Supplement and get 2-3 ways to solve the problem. It couldn#039t be any easier than that!
